What is Fesenjan?

What is Fesenjan?

Fesenjān (pronounced fesenjoon) is a sweet and sour Iranian stew from Northern Iran. It is typically served over rice and is common also to Iraqi cuisine. As a festive dish for special occasions, it has become part of Jewish Rosh Hashannah celebrations.

This dish is typically made with chicken, but the 'must-have' ingredients are ground walnuts and pomegranate concentrate. The rich, flavorful sauce is made nutty by the ground walnuts, with a pleasant tang from the pomegranate molasses. The spices of turmeric, cinnamon and nutmeg add to the overall balance.
