Beef Stroganoff in Black Truffle Pasta
Philip Tessier (during cook): "Right now I'm making a pasta dough. Probably the fastest one I've ever made in my life. For me, it's about bringing as much technique and flavor as I can to win. Hopefully it comes out good."
Philip Tessier: "If I'm being honest, I didn't push super hard in round one because I was just like, let me just play it safe, survive day one. Unfortunately, that decision landed me straight next to Matt Peters." Observers noted immaculate, almost unused-looking stations for both Philip and Matt.
To judges: "So this is the beef stroganoff dish. Took the beef and put the sauce inside, wrapped it in the pasta with a little bit of black truffle, and then there was a little cream mushroom soup on the side." Philip Tessier (post-elimination): "It's disappointing. I think to do all the effort to come here and to face off on the first day. You know, it was going to come down to splitting hairs."
Padma Lakshmi: "That's intense. I loved how beautiful this looked. It looked like the highest-end restaurant I could hope to get a reservation in."
Michael Cimarusti: "The beef was obviously delicious and very tender. Just enough acid to make it really palatable. Would hate to have been the one that had to face you in that kitchen today."
Wiley Dufresne: "It's actually kind of unbelievable how many things you put on the plate."
Michael Cimarusti: "This one is really difficult. These dishes are just both amazing. It's down to just splitting hairs."
Verdict: Padma Lakshmi cast the deciding vote for Matt Peters. "Philip, you served your final dish." Philip Tessier was eliminated.
