Who made this dish?
Signature challenge: eight identical handheld savory pies. Gary made his grandma's pies, filled with minced beef, potato and onion (the narrator also mentions cheese), seasoned with Oxo cubes, in short crust pastry with a classic design. Gary: "I'm excited about this one. Those are known as love pies." Gary: "I'm making a short crust pastry, so it gives it a nice crisp. You can do it in flaky, but this is nice." Gary: "This one my grandma used to make for us in the 60s and 70s. I used to go down on the number eight bus. She lived in a little council house. Best place on earth." Gary (on the outside): "Loads of egg wash. Just egg wash." Gary: "So these are Oxo cubes." Gary: "They need to be more brown." Gary: "They're okay. Not quite as good as grandma's." Gary (presenting): "These are my grandma's mince, potato and onion pies."
Paul: "It looks inconsistent with the egg wash. The way around that is the double egg wash." Paul: "Love the flavor, but for me it's a bit dry." Nigella: "I love the pastry, Gary. My feeling is you just need a bit more oomph in the seasoning."
