JMO's Lamb Keema Special: Minced Lamb Curry with Pilau Rice and Mint Raita
Narrator: "Remembering his family Eid celebrations, presenter Jason has made JMO's keema, a minced lamb curry with pilau rice and a mint raita."
Jason: "Some lovely ginger to give it a nice punchy flavor."
Jason: "With three kids, I cook probably almost every single day. My son says he chucks it in and hopes for the best. And nine times out of ten, I'm looking at a lot of empty plates. There's always a thank you at the end of it, which is lovely."
Jason: "I've got Welsh Pakistani heritage, so I grew up eating this keema dish, which is a minced lamb curry, but I've called it JMO's Lamb Keema Special."
Jason: "JMO is the nickname that was given to me by my football pals, and technically they were using it before J.Lo, Jennifer Lopez."
Jason: "I consider this to be soul food. At the end of Ramadan, this was always the dish that was the centerpiece of a big table. Earthy food. The lamb, the fusion of the potatoes."
Jason: "That lovely rice."
Jason: "I can't wait for them to try this."
Jason: "I hope they love it."
{Jason}: "It was a timing issue."
Jason: "Okay, understood. Thank you so much."
Jason: "I'm disappointed with the rice because I cook rice all the time. But he's got a great point. I'm not cooking for the family here."
Jason: "Well, Shakira and I are opening a rice cooking school called How to Hammer Rice."
During the cook:
Giorgio Locatelli: "So this is a keema, Welsh lamb. But you've got peas as well."
Grace Dent: "Jason, you talk the talk, but will you deliver? I hope so, because you've really sold this."
Grace Dent: "A good keema is the ultimate comfort food. A minced stew, lots of spices in it. But the spice really needs to be well judged. It needs to have a good burr of heat. He's putting peas in there. Too many, it might become watery and a bit sweet. The rice also needs to be gorgeous. There's a lot of risks."
Giorgio Locatelli: "JMO. He's got a lot of confidence, but confidence can only bring you so far."
Verdict:
Grace Dent: "It does look like a child's drawing of the sun."
Giorgio Locatelli: "The meat is crispy, is delicious, but the rice is overcooked and congealed. What happened?"
Giorgio Locatelli: "But I love the raita. There's enough mint in it, it's fresh enough."
Grace Dent: "JMO, behind the stoves you are a man that looks like you know what you are doing. But this needs bags more oomph."
Giorgio Locatelli: "You're not cooking at home for your kids. You're cooking for us now. Keep that in mind."
Deliberation:
Giorgio Locatelli: "Jason, very cocky. He missed the mark on the presentation and the rice. How can you overcook rice like that?"
