Pear Chocolate and Hazelnut Upside Down Cake
Pear Chocolate and Hazelnut Upside Down Cake

28 year old mum of two Sarah-Jane is a vicar's wife who regularly bakes for her husband David's congregation in West Sussex. Her pear, chocolate and hazelnut upside down cake is a parish favorite. She has an oven where all the numbers are worn off around the dial, making it difficult to judge cooking times. She carefully monitored the cake's shake in the middle to determine doneness, not wanting it to collapse when turned out. She made spiky hazelnut decorations for the top.

Mary Berry: 'The decoration that you've managed to get is quite even and well structured.' Paul Hollywood: 'The chocolate cake is delicious, but I can't taste the pear.' Sarah-Jane explained the pear doesn't have a strong flavor anyway. Mary noted 'That's why I poached it in the wine.' Paul responded 'Unfortunately, we've lost the wine' and joked about whether she had a tipple before starting. However, Mary praised 'I love the way you've built the structure of the pears on there. Very professional. When you look at it, you've actually managed to hold the pear flavor. It is so delicious.'
