Tournament of Champions ™

Lorena

Lorena Garcia was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1971 into a family where food was the language of gathering. She grew up cooking for family occasions and credits those early kitchens as the foundation of everything that followed. Her first academic ambition was law — she completed a degree at Santa Maria University in Caracas — but the pull of cooking proved stronger, and she relocated to the United States to study culinary arts at Johnson and Wales University, later receiving an honorary doctorate in the same field.

Her formative professional years unfolded across an unusual number of culinary cultures. Beginning with an apprenticeship at the Ritz-Carlton in Paris, she worked her way through Italy, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and China — an itinerary that gave her a global technical vocabulary she has spent the rest of her career deploying in the service of Latin flavours. The combination shows clearly in the dish at hand: a masa harina crust from Mexican culinary tradition, a Peruvian sauce, a Korean-inflected

kimchi aioli, Japanese kewpie mayonnaise, and a Venezuelan salsa criolla, all unified by a Latin sensibility for heat, brightness, citrus, and creaminess.

She opened her first restaurants in Miami's Design District in 2002. Her most ambitious project came in 2017 with CHICA at The Venetian in Las Vegas — a Latin American celebration drawing on Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico —

which made her the first female Latina chef on the casino strip's Wall of Culinary Titans alongside Thomas Keller and Emeril Lagasse. Further restaurants followed at major airports. Her non-profit Big Chef, Little Chef has worked to combat childhood

obesity through food education in Hispanic communities.

Garcia is a Food Network fixture, having previously judged Seasons 3 and 5 of Tournament of Champions before crossing to the competitor's side in Season 7 as one of four mystery 'culinary icons' — high-profile chefs revealed only as they stepped onto the arena floor. She had also competed on Top Chef Masters Season 4, where she reached the penultimate episode. On her Season 7 appearance: "I know what it takes [as a judge]," she said before her cook. "But on this side, everything changes and everything goes outside the window."
