Ingredients

100 g wholemeal flour 350 g plain white flour 50 g oats (plus extra for topping) 1½ teaspoons salt 1½ teaspoons baking soda 285 ml buttermilk 125 ml Guinness 60 g black treacle

Method

Preheat oven to 350F. Prepare a non-stick baking tray with flour. Mix together the flours, oats, salt and baking soda.

Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients and mix.

Mix the Guinness and black treacle together until it’s fully blended. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well.

Bring the dough together into a dough ball. Adjust with Guinness and flour to get the right texture, not too sticky or dry.

Place the round dough ball on your prepared baking tray.

Flatten the ball a little and then cut a deep cross into it. The cross should go almost to the base of the loaf – but not quite!

Sprinkle the loaf with oats.

Bake the loaf for 35-40 minutes until cooked and golden.
