Challenge:
6 Individual Orange and Ginger Treacle Puddings
The technical challenge in Desserts Week of Episode 7 of The Great British Baking Show ™ was set by Paul Hollywood.
As a tip, he said " This recipe has three very distinct textures and you've got to get them all right for it to work."
The challenge was to make six individual orange and ginger treacle puddings. The puddings should. be light, and served with custard (also known as Crème Anglaise) plus a ginger and orange syrup.
NOTE: The word 'treacle' is used widely in Great Britain. It is just another name for the product called 'Golden Syrup' and you can buy it here and avoid all the mess of making the syrup in the recipe below! This recommendation is all mine - the Great British Baking Show ™ is 100% agnostic regarding products and brands.
The contestants set about this technical challenge with gusto, with the most unsuccessful results in the history of The Great British Baking Show ™! Five of the six offerings were completely inedible and not judged. Tasha was the only baker to come up with a taste-worthy pudding, and most likely that is because she defied the recipe and took her puddings out of the bain marie to speed up the cooking process.
This pudding is not really as difficult as this might make you think, so don't be put off. The challenge is in being asked to make this against the clock - the fact that it was being televised forced the bakers to serve up their finished puddings before they were ready. When you cook this at home, you're unlikely to be on international television, so you will almost certainly win star baker.
