The Great British Baking Show ™
Iain R
Iain Ross might be the first person in Bake Off history whose path to the tent began not with a childhood memory of baking with Granny, but with a barbell. Originally from Coleraine in County Londonderry, the 29-year-old software engineer was once an amateur powerlifter following in the footsteps of his decorated bodybuilder father. But somewhere between deadlifts and degree work at Queen's University Belfast, Iain discovered a different kind of rising — the yeasty kind. He baked his very first loaf on the day he finished his final university exams, and while his classmates went out celebrating, Iain stayed in and found a new obsession.
That obsession eventually made him a social media phenomenon. Under the handle @thug.loaf, the self-proclaimed "Yeastie Boy" has built a following of nearly one million across TikTok and Instagram by doing something wonderfully odd: painting famous album covers onto sourdough bread using edible food coloring and activated charcoal powder. His "Bohemian Wrapsody" — a tortilla bearing the faces of Queen — has been viewed nearly seven million times. He's created Wu-Tang Flan, Freak On A Quiche, Garlic Slip-Knots, and Mac Miller Mac-Arons. For his art bread, he uses a hybrid yeasted-sourdough recipe that produces a smooth, blister-free canvas, then freezes the proofed dough to create a firm surface for painting with stencils.
But Iain is more than a visual artist with flour on his hands. He blends classic flavors with creative twists, often using fermented fruits and vegetables to add depth and complexity. If an ingredient can be pickled, aged, or cultured, he's eager to experiment. When he entered the Bake Off tent for Series 16 in September 2025, he carried with him a specific mission: to rewrite the legacy of "Iain from Belfast" — a reference to Series 5's Iain Watters, who was famously eliminated after the Bingate baked Alaska disaster. (He even later referenced this directly in a later showstopper challenge.) Living in Belfast with his girlfriend Dervla and their cat Viktor, Iain brings warmth, wit, and a deeply Northern Irish identity to everything he creates.
